have you checked your insurance provider..

many of them offer a free replacement(no more than one per year which I take
whole hearted advantage of). Some may want a deductible of the windshield
as wel, but is still cheaper then a new one.

As for whether a GenI can utilize a GenII, I believe so, I do not recal any
major cab differences in GI to GII
