Well, exactly, that and stability. You have more load-bearing capacity with
two tires as they're symmetrical, and evenly placed on the wheel, and as
punch mentioned, if one goes flat (I've seen a lot of trucks running with an
inside tire flat), provided it's a pickup or an empty medium-duty, sometimes
the driver won't even notice it. I imagine it's a bit different with an
outside tire blowing, but I don't know...
