I am new to auto trannys and wrenching in general. I have never heard
anything like this before ... why would it be bad to change the fluid?
Fatal? ... I've got goosebumps ... why fatal?

Nova Scotia Mike

The fluid that is used turns into a varnish over time (way past the time
it should have been replaced) and coats everything in the tranny with
it. I have heard from several old timers who worked or owned tranny
shops it's better at that point to just let the fluid go and when the
tranny finally goes have everything fixed then. They say it will run for
a long time before this happens. According to one guy I once knew who
worked at a tranny shop when business was slow they would talk people
into changing the fluid on cars like this and watch the problems show up
the next week.

If you are worried just check the fluid and see if it has a little bit
of red left in it. If it does it has been changed when it should. BTW<
the red is nothing but a dye added to help judge the time the fluid
needs to be changed and/ or if it gets too hot and is burning.
