This is the method an engine machine shop I used to work next door to used
all the time. They were tearing down engines almost daily and never used
anything other than a screw driver, hammer and pliers to remove freeze
plugs.

FSM says to hit it on the bottom inside the lip with a freeze plug driver
(standard screwdriver works here for me). HTis should pop the top outward
and use a pair of pliers to pull it out.
