This is not nessacarily the case....

Yes, there are customer specs involved, but there are tolerances based on
pricing and availability. There are only a handful of manufacturers, and
when it comes time to replenish inventory, usually the lowest priced item
that fits within the specs.

One Mobil1 or Mopar filter can be different, depending on what batch you get
it from. Also it depends on distribution points. For example, imagine a
Mopar distribution point in Chicago and Seattle. Fram may have a plant in
St. Louis, and Champion may have a plant in Boise. If the cost per filter
is similar, the freight costs then comes into play. So the Chicago
distribution point may get the Frams and the Seattle distribution point gets
the Champions. Still the same box, same look, just slight differences in
the specs.

I'm not saying this is the case, but I have seen similar scenarios like this
before on other parts.
