A good technician with the right tools can diagnose a cylinder misfire
without you having to take it to the dealer. A misfire can come from a
plug, wire, coil, lack of compression, injector or harness problem,
valve train problems.... To diagnose a carbon buildup on the
valves-just do a compression test, this will tell you whether a valve is
not shutting properly. A scope check can tell you whether the ignition
system is working properly, unless it's a 4.7L. You can check short
term and long term fuel trim with a scanner and unplug and plug in the
injector to diagnose problems like that. There is a lot of ways to
determine this problem, just gotta get a good technician that knows how
to check it.
