I have seen them in the $200-2500 range,

Barry, I think you meant to say $2000-2500 range.

A combination unit can be good if you are in the welding business and need
to move the equipment to the job site.
The drawbacks are:
* You don't get the most efficient portable generator or the most efficient
welder,
* They are very heavy and hard to move unless they are permanently mounted
on a truck or trailer.
* You will need a spool gun in order to do MIG.

For the same amount of money you can get a pretty good generator that
doesn't need the extra windings and a pretty good welder that can be used
with the generator or plugged in at your shop without having the engine
running.
