The filter is on the front of the motor, in the middle. I really like
John's idea of cutting a bigger hole and fabbing up a new removable piece to
cover the carnage.

I just throw a sizeable old rag up in there under the filter
to catch the drippings. I use an old bath towel cut in half
and it seems to do good duty for about 3 oil changes before
it's pretty soaked and has to be trashed. I'm thinking of
tearing off the plastic shroud and fabbing one up from sheet
aluminum, just haven't gotten to it yet. I think I read on
the list here a couple years ago about someone doing
that..... But I'm not going to do that until I'm ready to
make another one. I don't want to run it without that shroud
in place.

The "door" to remove the filter is about 4.5" in diameter,
so it would be
tough to get the milk carton in there. Great idea though
for more
accessible filters...

Good job Art! Some folks swear by the method of cutting the
bottom off a
two liter plastic bottle and slipping that up over the oil
filter to catch
all the stuff, (uh, leave the cap on the other end...).
I am the one that always pours some dino oil through the
engine to wash out
the gunk in the oil pan each oil change. I run about half a
quart, more if
necessary until it runs clean.
