Dakotas didn't get the 45RFE until 2000 when the 4.7 motor came out. The
44RE came with the 318 in Dakotas from 97-99. It's heavier duty version of
the 42RE, which is based off the old A500. It's a decent tranny, though not
the most heavy duty. For some reason, 92-96 Dakotas with a 318 go the
46RH/RE, which is based off the old 727. When the Gen III's came out, DC
went with a lighter duty tranny for some reason, the 44RE, maybe for weight
savings. If your 44RE is working for you, go for it. If it ever craps out,
get a 46RE if you want something heavier duty.
