I had thought about the spare tire situation and here’s my take on it.
First, the reason I went to a 5 on 5 ½ pattern was because I plan to
eventually swap the front out to a straight axle also. A Dana 44 from
a late 70’s Bronco/F150 to be specific. That axle has a 5 on 5 ½
pattern and I would have a matched set again. However, originally the
front was going to be swapped out first, not the rear which I’m only
doing first because of the recent problems I’ve had with it. For now I
will have a mis-matched bolt pattern on the truck and will most likely
swap the front out next spring (money and time permitting of course).
As for now, I’m not really worried about it. I drove a wrecker for 13
years and did more than my share of Triple “A” tire changes. I really
hate changing flat tires. I’ve had one flat in the last 15 years and
that time, I pumped the tire up with a portable compressor I keep in
the truck and drove it to a gas station. If I can’t drive it, I’ll
have it towed, even if I have a spare under the back of the truck. If
I have to take a long trip, I’ll throw a second spare in the back and
go, but for local trips, I have a bunch of friends still driving
wreckers and their Nextel Direct Connect numbers pre-programmed. Did I
mention I really hate changing flat tires.
