Cruise Control

Thanks for the excellent advice... The air bag is what I'm worried
about. Do I need any special tools (beside the wheel puller)?

I did it to a '96 Gen II body style. While I am sure there are some
differences it wasn't that hard at all. I would guess that the Gen III
still uses a vacuum canister on the firewall (don't remember one in my
'01 though) so all you had to do was mount that and plug it into the
harness (already a plug where they say it is) and hook the cable from it
to the throttle body. Inside the cab you have to remove the steering
wheel and replace the clock spring and add the buttons (same ones
shipped form the factory) and hook everything back up. I did get a new
brake switch for the pedal but when I got down there the part number was
same as they supplied so I didn't bother plus it looked to be a real
pita to replace.

One thing, the instructions I had for the airbag removal were vague. In
the FSM I had it says to disconnect the battery and put the key into the
ignition in the "on" position for 5 minutes (I waited 20 just for a
little extra buffer) to discharge the capacitor it uses. Then it's just
four bolts on the back of the wheel and it came right out. One simple
little plug on the back and I put it away from anything on a work bench.
After it was out you have to remove the nut that hold the wheel on and
then your supposed to use a wheel puller to get the wheel off (clock
spring is behind it). I just got both arms around it and gave it a bear
hug and tugged about three times and it came loose.

Sorry for such a long reply but it one of those things that it's better
to know what is involved instead of saying "it's not that hard". IMO.
It's not worth paying the dealer to do it. $250 isn't a bad price for a
totally stock kit.
