Put a large, flat head screw driver under the edge of the cap and pry
straight up. The cap should separate in 2 parts. The bottom part, of
course, will still be stuck in the head. Take a pair of channel locks
or vise grips and grab it good and twist it out. Make sure you have the
new one already with you.
You cant blame yourself. They click when you install them to keep
from overtightening, like the old gas caps...
