the dak is overheating

Coming back from ohio this weekend (I live in northern Virginia) the dak
started overheating in the mountains of west Virginia. The weather was
hot and muggy and I had the a/c going as well. While climbing one of the
numerous mountains I noticed my temp gauge way past its normal setting
and reading around 230-240! I shut off the a/c and took the next exit to
check it out. All of my fluids were normal and no lights came on the
dashboard. I limped home with the a/c off and babying it up the hills.
The temp gauge stayed in the normal range (180?) unless I was climbing
more hills, even going 55-60 when it would spike up to 210-220. I've got
a 2000 4.7 quadcab 4x4. any thoughts on this before I take it to the
shop? Thanks in advance. adam
