For most things (especially things that will be outdoors), almost
everyone will recommend a silicone spray lube. I picked up a couple
cans of Pyroil silicone spray and it seems to work well. It still
attracts a little bit of dirt and dust if it sits on a flat surface.
I spray the #(%*)! out of my boat trailer a couple times a year with
it and it keeps things nice and quiet, although it does collect a bit
of dust where it sits on the rails.

Definitely lasts a lot longer than WD-40, particularly outdoors. I
still use WD-40 for just about everything indoors, though, because
it's so easy to get (and I have about 15 cans that I've accumulated
over the past few years).
