  I don't know if this has any bearing on the discussion or not, but
when I accidentally shifted my 318 from 4th to 3rd at about 5,000 rpms
once (that's the sort of thing you only do ONCE) ;-) I bent three
valves. I assumed that the 318 was an interference engine because of
that, but I may be wrong.
