At higher RPM's, yes...you can definitely bend/break some valves if the
chain lets go. At lower RPM's, the engine will, more than likely, just
stop running. At higher RPM's, it will turn around a few times which
can be just enough to damage the valves/pistons.
Best bet (again), replace the chain and tensioner at every 60-70K miles.

I don't know if this has any bearing on the discussion or not, but
when I accidentally shifted my 318 from 4th to 3rd at about 5,000 rpms
once (that's the sort of thing you only do ONCE) ;-) I bent three
valves. I assumed that the 318 was an interference engine because of
that, but I may be wrong.
