Howdy.
I have a really stuck bolt. Head broke off long ago, before me. I have
tried
repeated soakings with Bolt-Loose-In-A-Can crap. At first I had filed two
flat spots on the sides of the 1/2 inch stub of bolt body sticking out. I
tried Vise Grips on said flat spots. Not a single budge. More repeated
soakings. Na da. I then dug out the hack saw and sawed a pair of criss cross
grooves out of the top of the protuberance. Surprising myself, I actually
had a pretty good Philips groove pattern come out of it. I took the impact
driver to it. Using my 'medium' sized hammer ... I broke the 1/2 impact
driver bit. Not a smidgeon of a budge. Lastly, I attempted to drill it out.
I've never had to drill out a broken bolt before. I have a tap and die set
that came with a whack of drill bits. I picked the smallest one that came in
the kit and went at my nemesis bolt. I snapped my little drill bit in half
without putting a dent in the bolt. I was using some cinnamon smelling
"cutting oil". I did not think I was applying too much pressure but
apparently I was. Are you supposed to drill really fast with little pressure
(like when grinding)? Or really slow with fair pressure (with a bigger drill
bit)?
The bolt is one of two that hold the seat to the frame on my old XL 350.
I've been trying to avoid using heat because I'd have to remove a lot of
plasticy/rubbery/meltable parts to do it right ... and I'm lazy ... and it's
been broken for a long time already ... and I'm a menace with a torch ... or
any fire for that matter.
