Just sounds like a bad thread or bolt from the factory.

I took a few minutes to browse the RO's at work and did find a few
Dakota's with broken shock bolts. Here's the "Dealership" fix:
Retap/Clean threads, install new bolts with locktight Blue, torque to
80ft.lbs.
