Fuel gauge gone wild

My parents are in the middle of a rather long road trip and their '00
Durango w/ 53,000 miles has sprouted an interesting problem with the
overhead computer and gas gauge:

"Sat in 90+ at Yosemite and it went nuts. As things cooled (up the
mountain), DTE increased. Today it happened again, but from 50 mi from
Phoenix on in, DTE was either 0 or about 25 and gas gauge was either 0
or just above. Now I see about 100 mi DTE and things are cooling off a bit."

Any ideas on why the gas gauge and computer might be fluctuating due to
temperature? I'm guessing something tied to the sending unit but aside
from that I'm drawing a blank.
