This might not qualify as a bright idea ;-) but would it be
possible to drop the driveshaft and run the truck on a lift/jack
stands to eliminate the possibility that it is the engine,
tranny or transfer case?
On a related note, what about a similar test, but leaving the
driveshaft in place and pulling the axles to just spin the diff?
It just seems that replacing the entire axle is quite an
undertaking (and expensive, depending on how you go about it)
to fix a problem which hasn't absolutely been determined to be the
rear. (I hate to see someone take the "throw parts at a problem"
solution, especially when the parts are so expensive.) :-)
It might very well end up being the rearend and you need
to replace it anyway, but if it isn't it'd be a real bummer
to spend that kind of money and end up with the same problem. :-(
