Did he build it from scratch?? If he built if from a kit... Most kits come
with a recommendation on which size engine you should use if you build it to
the instructions specs. If he's at the entry level into the hobby he's
probably looking at a .40 or .60 size airplane. From there it all depends
on how you want the thing to fly. If you want to make it fly like a real
airplane, go with the recommendations or a step below.(not alot of fun) If
you want enough power to get yourself out of trouble, you can go a half or
whole step up. If you want to be able to "make like and elevator", then
you upsize the engine a notch or two. This is more fun but also more
advanced. They can get away from you quick. Then all your left with is
$300 worth of Balsa dust.

There is really NO WAY to cover all the different choices in an email. If
your friend is just starting in the hobby and this is his first model then I
would strongly suggest that he go to the local hobby shop and talk to the
guys there. I've never been to a hobby shop that didn't want to help a
newbie. If it's a trainer airplane it really won't be that hard of a
choice, go with what's recommended for the model. I would go cheap if it's
his first airplane...they tend to get alot of abuse. Hope that helps.
