Oil filters are like tires or batteries. They are all made by a few
companies. Just because it sayd "Brand X" on the outside, doesn't mean it is
a cheap filter. It could be a Purolator, Champion, Wix, or, heaven forbid, a
Fram. Conversely, just because it is a "name brand" doesn't mean it is of
good quality. Fram is a "name brand" filter, but have proven to be of
lesser quality-I would call them junk.
In fact, when people started complaining of their 302 Fords rattling on
startup, Ford found the problem was using Fram filters, which have poorly
designed anti-drainback valves, which were allowing the filter to drain.
Upon startup, there would be no oil pressure until the filter filled. The
fix was to use a better quality filter.
Caveat Emptor.
