sorry for the lack of clarity:
I was "talking about the springs that hold the pads into the calipers,
and not the spring that goes on the outside of the caliper"

I'd have had to grind off rivet heads and then somehow peen over the
numbs on the new pads to hold them on. without making the new pads
into
little-bits-of-pad-material-no-longer-stuck-to-their-mount-in-a-single-
useful-piece. That's the exact problem I was correcting with the front
brake job =)
