The 242 - 231 swap is a popular one among the WJ crowd, since the 242's VC
can be quite fragile for offroading. Should be a straight swap, possibly
requiring an input shaft swap from your old unit (if it's reusable?)

so does anyone really know anything about the 231 versus 242? Since
they're available in the same vehicles, I'd expect them to be pretty
interchangeable as far as linkage position, bolt pattern and size go,
and that I'd only have to worry about a possible change in driveshaft
lengths. what about the interchangeability of a '90 Dakota's 'case?
