what plugs did you put in? I don't remember the number of the 'right'
Autolite plug, but if you stuck with the stock heat range, you will
definitely ping under load on 87 octane. a cooler thermostat will
help, too, assuming you still have a belly pan gasket. Aside from the
ping symptom, I have no idea how to diagnose a bad pan gasket, so I'm
not overly much help in eliminating that as a consideration.

as far as the milage "concern," what configuration is your truck?
those are roughly the numbers I get out of my 318 4x4 CC with 3.55
gears and 32" a/t tires (barely any tracable change as I moved from 28"
to 29" now to 32"). those numbers don't have me concerned in the
least.
