Although most trucks are "overbuilt" when you compare their actual
abilities to their published specs (the manufacturers have to build
in some safety margin and assume the vehicles will be used at their
max every day of their lives) there is the legal aspect as well. I have
heard that in some areas there are severe penalties to be had for
exceeding the GCVWR of your vehicle. (i.e. police can pull you over
and make sure you are in compliance, etc.) Also, in our regrettably
litigious society, one has to consider the ramifications of being
involved in an accident with an "overloaded" vehicle. If some
slimy ambulance-chaser thinks they can use that against you, they
sure will try!
