Reason is not for you to see better but for others to see you better in
daylight,
especially during the period approaching dusk. Apparently there are
studies (I don't
know which ones) which indicate that it's easier to pick up another car when
their lights are on. Just as there have been studies that certain colour
in cars
are more difficult to see in the daylight.

Since quiet a few drivers are not diligent in turning on their lights
during approach
of dusk or in early morning light, the CDN gov't mandated that the
manufacturers
automatically have headlights on at 50% intensity (DRL).

I personally find it easier to pick up a car with lights on during the day
than those
without their lights on and I've been driving since 1953 :-( Makes me want to
walk around with a miner's helmet on :-P

The only time that I disable them is at the track, just a matter of
disconnecting
the wiring harness at the DRL module.
