While not qyuite like you described, in 1996 when I
worked at JPL, they had designed and built a remote
conrtol HUMVEE. The engineer showed me around the out
and insides...I remember laser sesnors that would
detect obstacles as well as numerous cameras to look
around. The only thing that puzzled me was how were
they going to reload the TOW launcher that was
sticking out of the top. I never saw the thing drive
as they tested it out
at Ft. Irwin in the Mojave Desert. BTW, these are the
same guys that designed and built the 3 different
rovers that have cruised Mars. They have the coolest
toys, eh?
