I guess I assumed that he had tried everything else and nothing worked. Maybe
you guys don't get heavy-duty water spots like we do here in Texas. I had some
extrememly stubborn water spots on my car once from an automatic sprinkler
system. Not only was it hard water, they added fertilizers and a little bug
killer to boot. I tried everything to remove the water spots. NOTHING worked.
Not Mother's polish, not wax, certainly not vinegar. The only thing that DID
work for me (and to clarify, on CHROME and WINDOWS, as Dan originally wrote)
was ultra fine steel wool. This recommendation came from a local detail shop,
btw. If you're only using it once, who cares if it rusts when you throw it
away? And as I suggested in my original response, don't put too much
pressure in one spot for too long.

The best thing I can recommend for water spots on PAINT is 3M Perfect It III
Compound (yes, it's safe for clear coats). With the same disclaimer as the
steel wool, don't put too much pressure in one spot for too long.
