Distributor Drive Timing

I have a few questions regarding the distributor drive gear alignment:

I rotated the crank until the intake valve on no.1 was closing, piston came
to the top and mark on the damper was on TDC. This is TDC on the firing
stroke, correct?

The crank stays in this position for setting the distributor timing (do not
advance the crank to the V8 mark on the damper) correct?

The picture in the FSM has the distributor gear slot pointing to the front
intake manifold bolt, but that picture is a V6. Is is supposed to be in the
same position on a V8 (which wouldn't be the front intake manifold bolt), or
point the front bolt of a V8 manifold?

I can get the slot to point slightly counter clockwise of the position
pictured in the FSM or to the extreme front intake manifold bolt (almost but
not quite straight ahead) but nothing in between.

Any hints, tips, suggestions etc are appreciated!

Thanks,
James
