That's not quite my understanding on how this system works.

The pcv valve on the pass. side valve cover is "the vacuum source" for the
crankcase ventilation system in that vacuum in the intake manifold determines
when the valve opens and closes. The valve, itself, is the metering device.

The hose that runs from the driver's side "breather" to the air filter casing
is the "filtered air source". Clean air is pulled from the filtered side
of the
air filter housing through crankcase and then up through the PCV valve
and then into the intake manifold for burning as the engine runs.

If there is any difference in changing from the stock hose connection to
the air
filter box to a push-in "breather" on the valve cover (e.g. a K&N breather),
it is only in the quality of the filtered air source. Naturally, a poor
filter or filter
seal will contaminate your engine oil directly.

If there's any failure or clogging at either end of the system (pcv valve or
breather), it can cause heavy engine sludging, poor engine performance
and stalling.
