Gearing can change your mileage, but if you're turning too low on RPM's (as
in city driving in OD), you can also get worse mileage as well as the engine
has to work harder to stay moving.

Think of an old 3-speed bike and gear selection (not quite accurate, but
you'll get the picture):

1st gear gets you moving quickly out of the hole (3.90:1 as the gear
example)
2nd gear gets you moving as well but requires a little more effort to start
(3.55:1)
3rd gear is a nice cruising gear but if going to slow, you have to work
harder to keep moving (OD in the city as slower speeds)

I run 3.90:1 gears in my V6 Dakota and on the highway (turning 2600rpm @
70mph with 255/50-17 tires) I still get about 19-20mpg. The V6's like
higher RPM's as that is where they're powerband is.

Where can I get more information on gearing? How will a change in gearing
affect my mpg? Vendors? Thanks.
