Yes Josh, you are right. This is a pretty common problem and an easy fix.
It's the sensor that is located on top of the differential. I think its
about $35 and pretty easy to repair yourself.

IIRC, these are the symptoms of a VSS (vehicle speed sensor) going bad. I
think it's in the differential pumpkin somewhere. A quick search of the
Archives would probably yield you some more detailed information.
