That's correct...the '97 transmissions have a speed sensor but not like the
'98+ models. It's for the speedo gear but it rarely goes bad. If it's bad,
the updated sensor comes with a new harness and you'll have to cut/solder
the harness into the factory one on the truck. It's on the driver-side at
the tailshaft housing - if you change, make sure you put some grease or oil
around the o-ring on the new sensor as not to pinch it on installation
(slips right in). Requires a 10mm or 11mm wrench and a small "tug" to
remove.
