Finally dropped the trans (literally) out from under Christine. After
discovering the ugly truth that the trans swap was not going to work - I
just left it sitting up there with my jack under it. I had to return
the transmission jack to the guy who let me borrow it during the work.
Thus I had to improvise. I hope that crushing the trans pan isn't
necessarily going to produce a crushed valve body? hehehe

The 4x4 trans - with the tail assembly removed - was light enough to
actually pick up. In the process of moving it next to the 2wd trans -
to take pics - I totally drenched my jeans in ATF3. Grrr...

As you can see there is one minor difference and one major difference.
The minor one seems to be just that one part of the drivers side of the
4x4 tranny housing is reinforced? The same part of the 2wd trans
housing is open and not "braced" so to speak.

The major difference is the placement of an additional bolt hole on the
bottom edge of the bellhousing on the 4x4 model. In retrospect - I
probably could have finished installation and stuck the starter in
place. But what was the leading factor in my aborting the mission, was
the fact that a critical bracket would not have been properly bolted in
place. This bracket interconnects and braces the front differential,
bolts to the engine block, and to the transmission bell housing. I just
didn't want to risk anything. Also in retrospect - I'm thinking it may
not have made THAT much difference - it may have been fine for what I
was going to do with it at Jon's - trails, mud pit, waterfall, short
jaunts into town.

(Shrug) Am I trying to make myself feel better by telling myself "oh no
- it wouldn't have worked without that ONE BOLT" - when right now I'm
thinking in the back of my head "eh - it might have worked!"

Having said this - I do not know if a 4x4 trans will bolt up in a 2wd
truck, as TJ is attempting to do. I honestly don't remember how the
sucker bolts up in a 2wd. I have done most of my wrenching (90 percent)
on Christine and not my 2wd Dakota.
