Similar situation here with the 05. But when I asked around, the common
consensus was that the fuel level thingamajiggie (pardon the technical term)
is set up to go off when you've got 4-5 gallons left. The reason is fuel
pumps are easily damaged when they're running dry, so to extend the life of
the fuel level thingamajiggie is calibrated so when you do hit E, you've
got enough gas to get more gas. That light is really meant to tell you "hey
idiot, buy more gas!!".... It's sound advice to follow!

Personally I have found by not letting it get below 1/2 a tank helps by
eliminating the shock of buying 17-18 gallons of gas at 2.05 a gallon!! :)
