good question. maybe using a 12 point hex socket on it with an impact
to lower the tire while it was in the shop?

maybe if you can get at the bolts that hold the tire winch up through
the tire...

you could also try re-shaping the thing to a square with the vice
grips, or using one of those Sears bolt-outs to grab onto the formerly
square shaft.

I don't remember if I still have my spare tire winch. I'll see if I
can dig it out of the leaves and take a couple pictures so you can see
where you're aiming for bolts, at least.
