I also test fitted mine with the factory insert as well, but I didn't like
the way the insert looked behind the Speed Grilles.

So I just zipped the plastic tangs off with a dremel tool and fitted them
up.......it's a matter of personal choice on as to remove the insert or not.

For appearence I prefered the look without factory insert.......

When I installed the Speed Scene inserts on my 99 Dakota I didn't want to
get
involved cutting out the original insert so I installed the Speed Scene
inserts
right over the orignal inserts. I would say that would be the prefered way
since the orginal inserts located the Speed Scene inserts perfectly.
