IIRC, it wasn't *too* bad getting the factory installed filter off of my
truck, I did have to use a filter wrench though from what I can remember.

The easiest way is to just send the customer on their way though, why tell
the customer and then have their vehicle in the shop for god knows how long
until it can be towed when they can just send them on their way and deal
with the failure at another time. They don't have any parts whatsoever in
the shop there, so if there's any sort of issue they're ill-equipped to deal
with it. I've got a friend who ended up having his motor replaced by one of
these quick lube places because they just plain forgot to fill it back up
with oil. Not only did they have to replace the motor, but a turbo and
about $7k worth of other assorted performance parts. He took it in hoping
to save some time and not have to lay on his back in the snow but it cost
him about 2 weeks of downtime and a new motor instead.
