I had a Gibson cat-back on my '96 318 for several years (it finally
rusted out). I replaced it with a Dynomax race magnum which I have
dumping out in front of the rear tire. (Still have the Gibson tip on
it though.) ;-) Anyway, I really liked the sound of the Gibson, especially
when the cat was out. (I have an "offroad pipe" which allows me to install
and remove the cat whenever I like.) The Dynomax race magnum is a bit
too harsh for my taste, and I need to leave the cat in with that muffler
since it is REALLY obnoxious when its out. Dumping in front of the rear
tire may have something to do with that though. :-) The Gibson had a
more mellow sound. My setup was JBA headers into an ATR 2.5" Y pipe,
then 3" pipe all the way to the Gibson cat-back, which included 3"
tailpipe out to a swept rear exit. It sounded absolutely fantastic, if I
say so myself. ;-) After my current muffler rusts out, I might have to
stick another Gibson under there. I did want to replace the Gibson with
another one at the time it rusted out, but time, money and circumstances
dictated a quick, cheap fix.
