It's actually not too bad, I used to do all sorts of custom fiberglass work
when I was a stereo installer. If you give me all the pieces, I can make
you a fiberglass box in about a day.

With a center console though, I'm looking for something that'll replace the
bottom portion of my stock armrest. I'm building it to house a 7" wide
touchscreen and a car computer. I've done a ton of research and there are
software pieces out there that'll feed realtime OBDII data into graphs and
stuff so that you can keep track of what your vehicle is doing, as well as
track it in realtime on a map via GPS. There's tons of cool stuff to do out
there. I want to keep the quasi-stock look that I'll get by leaving the
center armrest so that it's not a huge red flag to a potential thief.

As far as it being a long process, it's not that bad. If you have about a
week's time (since you've not done it before) you should be able to put
something together in that timeframe without issue. The easiest way to do
it is to shape your block of foam the way you want the console to look
(including cupholders and cubby holes) and then cover it with the fiberglass
matting. You can usually do a couple layers per day, and you need to build
it fairly thick to prevent cracking since it'll probably experience a bunch
of weight/abuse during its lifetime.
