This sounds rather similar to what happened to me when my speed sensor
went south. I think that a speed sensor would be the general consensus
here, that's how I knew to check mine.

What year truck do you have? Some of them have the sensor in the
tailhousing of the trans, and the newer ones have it in the top of the
diff. I'd start there.
