You can find various spray cleaners for the vents at most all parts
stores...but they will only mask the smell for a short period of time (used
them myself). If the smell has somewhat of a moldy/mildew smell, it's
probably going to be leaves/bugs/dust/dirt that's accumulated over time on
the evaporator.
BG (and Interdynamics) make a high quality evaporator cleaner that requires
you to drill a small hole in the A/C case (near the evaporator) where you
inject the cleaning foam into the case with the blower motor on HIGH. Once
the can is empty, you let it sit for a few minutes (blower off), and then
start the vehicle with the A/C OFF and heat ON (blower on high) to dry out
the evaporator. Grab a can of BG "Frigi-Fresh" or other A/C duct freshner
and spray it through the outside cowl vents (with the blower running). This
runs the spray through the A/C case and not just at the outside of the vents
(which doesn't do a whole lot anyway).
I've used the BG A/C Cleaning system for a few years now and it works very
well. Interdynamics also works...but it's not as much of an industrial
strength. You can find the BG stuff at O-Reily's (Hi-Lo), NAPA, and the
Interdynamics kit can be found at AutoZone/PepBoys/Advanced Auto.

Subject: DML: Air Vents & Funky Smells
Good Day;
Looking for a quick cure for a funky smell coming out of the air vents on my
97 dak.
I have slowly been cleaning everything in my truck to get rid of the smell
and have recently found the cause to be the vents. If anyone has a quick
and easy method of cleaning the vents, please provide.
Cheers;
Cory
