This is exactly what the problem was on a '79 GM I used to maintain. Would
engage the first time you turned it on then would not always work after
that. Book called for around 40 mils gap. This one was around 70 mils and
would sometimes not work. With engine idling, you could tap the front of
the clutch plate with the handle end of a screwdriver and it would snap to
life. In the case of this one, there was a short piece in front of the
clutch that was suitable for putting a big hose clamp around in order to
calibrate the gap when the clutch was disengaged. Worked great after that.

I believe that the gap may be too large between the flex plate armature and
the face of the rotor assembly. Will try to adjust today, hope there are
shims back there!
