Seems to me that Chrysler started the whole "retro" thing with the PT
Cruiser, didn't they? Even though it wasn't named after a specific
vehicle, it definitely got people looking in that direction. Then VW and
Mini jumped on the bandwagon, opening the floodgates. Nothing like taking
a creative idea and pummeling it to dust.

I'm probably forgetting some details somewhere. I don't have a timeline
in front of me or anything, but I don't recall any "retro" vehicles before
the PT Cruiser other than the Wrangler, which has always been a throwback
by intentional design.
