actually, i think you are right. DC did get the ball rolling on the whole
retro theme... but wrong car. the correct car was the Plymouth Prowler.

Seems to me that Chrysler started the whole "retro" thing with the PT
Cruiser, didn't they? Even though it wasn't named after a specific
vehicle, it definitely got people looking in that direction. Then VW and
Mini jumped on the bandwagon, opening the floodgates. Nothing like taking
a creative idea and pummeling it to dust.
I'm probably forgetting some details somewhere. I don't have a timeline
in front of me or anything, but I don't recall any "retro" vehicles before
the PT Cruiser other than the Wrangler, which has always been a throwback
by intentional design.
