Yeah I was really suprised to find almost nothing for Rich. Last week (Jul.
21st) was the 15th anniversary of his death. I was 14 when he died and it
was really the first time I was faced with losing a driver I admired. It's
just kind of sad that drivers that were not NASCAR, Indy, or F1 drivers
aren't remembered too much. Rich at least has a big USAC race named after
him. But other guys I remember, like J.D. McDuffie have nothing. J.D. was,
if I remember correctly, was another owner driver who had a shoestring
budget and ran Winston Cup for the fun of it. Again going by my faulty
memory he died when his car rolled over at a road course of all places.
There are few people who remember him. It just makes me sad when these guys
are forgotten. We had a local guy die a couple of years ago, dirt track
late model driver. Three car pile up and he got out of the car and seemed
ok, went to the hospital and they discovered internal bleeding and operated.
Everything went well and he left the hospital a couple of days later, walked
out of the place turned right back around and died a few minutes later,
blood clot from the surgery broke loose and got to his heart...the only cool
thing I did find was a web site http://vintageracingshirts.com they have old
style t-shirts from some old open wheel guys.

Thanks for listening to my rant,

-Joe

-Wish I could find something, I hope you do, I will keep looking. I was a
-Fireball Roberts fan; my Dad was one of his best friends. I still remember
-my Dad crying at his funeral, for his friend Glenn, (Fireball's real name).
-Also remember Davy and another favorite, Mark Donahue. Good luck,
-that is a
-super idea.
