Voltmeter might be a great idea, but I am not sure the gauge is failing,
they are fairly simple units. Clean up those connections and check it out.
Let us know if it makes any difference.

I'll double check things, battery terminals look ok and are tight and
clean. I guess it could be one of the cable ends has gone bad perhaps
with some corosion inside the cable that I cannot see. Could it be a
bad or failing guage? Would a good way to rule out the guage be to
use a voltmeter?
