Miles,
It sounds like you have a ground problem somewhere - I've run into similar
issues with my trailer before. Check and see how the trailer is grounded,
and make sure that both the truck connector and the trailer connector both
have a proper ground. That would be the first place I'd look.

I have a strange issue with my 2002 Dakota Quad Cab with regards to the
factory 7-pin trailer connector.
I have a 16 foot Kaufman auto trailer with electric brakes. It came with a
6 pin wiring connector and I purchased a 7 pin connector and wired it
according to the diagram on the cap of the factory 7 pin connector under the
bumper of the Dakota.
The trailer has a wiring harness with 5 wires.
Black - Trailer Brakes
White - Ground
Brown - Running lights
Yellow - Left Turn/Stop
Green - Right Turn/Stop
All lights and brakes function properly EXCEPT for the Running lights.
With the trailer connected I get the runing lights are ON when the
headlight switch is OFF.
Turn the headlight switch ON and the running lights turn off.
THE EXACT OPPOSITE OF WHAT YOU WOULD EXPECT THE RUNNING LIGHTS TO DO.
Normally I would suspect the problem to be with the trailer, and not the
Dakota. I have traced all the wires, found no shorts or incorrect wiring.
The trailer is only 1.5 years old.
I would not expect the trailer brake unit to play a role in this. I spliced
no wires and am using the brake to wiring harness connector that came with
the trailer brake.
I have only used the trailer in daylight hours so this has not been an
issue before this and I've let this problem go on for longer than I should
have. I need to get the trailer Virginia Inspected soon.
I feel that the trailer end 7 pin female connector is wired properly
because I can plug it into my brother-in-laws Chevy Pickup with a 7-pin
connector and all lights, including the running lights function properly.
This is an odd problem that I can't seem to find a solution to, The
running lights operate EXACTLY OPPOSITE of what they are supposed to do.
Can anybody give me a clue as to where to go with this?
I've done my homework on this and think that the trailer is 100% wired
properly and I get all lights except for the running lights to work.
