Sure it could, but have another look in there before you go to all that
trouble. Lousy distributor caps, rotor, plugs, wires, etc will do that too.
Are you using oil or seeing smoke out the back?

Simple question here guys,
Will a blown belly pan gasket (97, 318) affect engine RPM's, (idle
fluctuations etc.)?
I have only 68,000 kilometers (approx 45,000 miles) on my truck and it has
never used oil before. But now it seems it's starting to. Haven't looked
down the TB yet, but before winter I did and it was clean and shiny. As of
late the engine RPM's have been acting weird during idle and slowing down
for stop signs etc.
